Rocky Mount City elections will he conducted on May 5. On this date you will vote for Mayor, Aldermen and other City Officials. This, too, is an important elect ion—Don’t minimize it. On May 31 the Democratic Primary will be held for county, state, and congressional offices. There are two sets of registra tion books. You must be reg istered in your home ward in order to vote for City Officers. You must be registered in your home county precinct in order to Vote in the county, state, and fed eral elections. Check today to see if you are properly registered. Don’t waste your important vote by not being registered when voting time comes. Symphony Aided Mrs. D. Winstead, Jr., Sec retary of Ahe Rocky Mount Chap ter of the North Carolina Sym phony,, wrote to Manager E. H. 5uessmuth recently expressing the appreciation of the Officers, Di rectors and Workers to Sidney Plumenthal & Co., Inc. and the C. A. A., for the contributions •Oade to the Symphony Fund Drive. Mrs. Winstead wrote, ‘‘We be lieve that the youth of our com- teunity gain something from a performance which adds to their eurriculum along cultural lines and in that manner boosts their thinking to higher levels. Through "aur combined efforts we are pro- '^iding a great deal of enjoyment ^nd education to the children, as 'veil as the adults, of Rocky Mount.” Tlie Caromount Engineering Department is fast gaining the reputation as a Construction Crew par excellence. They are now in the midst of the man-sized addition to the Boiler Plant shown above. The addition will ijrovide space for a standby boiler in case of a breakdown. Safety Awards Made Both the Caromount and Wil son Divisions received high recog nition for Safety Achievement on April 2, 1952, at a luncheon sponsored by the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce in con junction with the North Carolina Department of Labor. The Wilson Division received The Certificate of Safety Achieve ment from the U. S. Department of Labor and the N. C... Depart ment of Labor for working the entire year of 1951 without a lost time accide^n,t. The Carpmount Division re ceived, ja.similar award in the form of a blue ribbon for reducing the accident frequency rate more than 40% for the second consecutive year. This ribbon is to be attached to the Certificate which was won for the year 1950. Forest H. Shuford, Commission er of Labor for North Carolina made the presentation and spoke to the group on safety programs. Representatives from establish ments in Nash, Wilson and Edge combe Counties were on hand to receive their awards. From Caro mount were Manager E. H. Suess- muth, Randolph Sutton, Charlie Laughridge, D W. Adams, John Sterken, R. Q. Ward, Ted Popliib and George Harper, Safety HI" rector. Gardeners Report K. J. Hawkins of the Dyehouse and veteran Caromount gardener reports considerable progress with his garden this year. As of April 1 he had cabbage five inches across, beets 2 inches high, lettuce the size of a silver dollar, carrots 2 inches high and strawberries in bloom. With the exception of straw berries all the above mentioned vegetables were planted the last week in February. For other vegetables Mr. Haw kins plans to wait until about the first of May. He says there’s no need to plant until the ground gets warm and that he will wait a couple of weeks and still get vegetables by the time those who plant on the traditional Good Friday planting date. Tom Bledsoe of the Weaving Department held to the Good Friday tradition. He spent a great deal of time getting his land well prepared for planting and on Good Friday he planted butter beans, snap beans, okra, corn, cabbage, cantalopes and cucumbers. Tom has had very good success by following the planting guides in the Turner’s Almanac (Ed. Note: We would like to have the experiences of other Caromount and Wilson gardeners). Variety And Minstrel Show Set For May The 1952 Variety and Minstrel Show with a cast of approximately 50 employees of the Caromount and Wilson Divisions will be pre sented in the Charles L. Coon High School Auditorium on Wed nesday, May 14 and in the Rocky Mount High School Auditorium mi Saturday, May 17. Both per formances will begin at 8:15 P. M. The Wilson Tlieraiieutic Clinic The new Therapeutic Clinic for crippled children and adults will receive the benefits from the show in Wilson. This project is spon sored by the Wilson Exchange Club and this club is distributing the tickets. 1-ittle League Baseball Teams Benefits from the Rocky Mount periormance of the show will go to the Little League Baseball Teams, which has proved to be such'popular recreation for young boys.i» A special committee was appointed by> the Rocky Mount Little League, to help in the spon sorship of this show. Specialty Acts Specialty Acts are being re hearsed now for the show. “The Barbershop Quartet,” two dance teams, “The Precision Twins” and “The Rhythm Girls,” and other dance numbers aluug with piano specialty and skits are included in the first act. (Continued on Page Four) I I Greenman Elected At the Spring meeting of the Rocky Mount Deanery of the North Carolina Catholic Layman’s Association, held at St. Agnes Auditorium in Washington, N. C., March 30, Walter Greenman of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Rocky Mount, was elect ed to serve as Chairman for the Rocky Mount Deanery for the next two years. He succeeds Matthew J. Bird, Executive Sec retary of the NCCLA from Wilson who held the chairmanship for the past two years. Walter Greenman is Superin tendent of the Finishing Depart ment at Caromount.
